The islamic concept of Taqwa, often translated as God-consciousness or piety, is central to Islamic spirituality and practice.
Ustaz Sameer outlines four levels of Taqwa, each corresponding to different aspects of a person’s being. These levels represent a comprehensive framework for developing a deep and meaningful relationship with Allah swt.
Body, Heart, Soul, & Self
“…Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.“
Quran 2:222 (Surah Al Baqarah)
Taqwa of the Body
- This level focuses on the physical actions and behaviours of an individual. It involves adhering to the laws of Sharia (Islamic law) regarding what is permissible (halal) and what is forbidden (haram).
- Practicing Taqwa at this level means being mindful of one’s physical actions, such as dietary restrictions (e.g., consuming what is halal, avoiding alcohol and pork), maintaining cleanliness, and performing obligatory acts of worship like prayer and fasting.
- It emphasises the importance of discipline in one’s physical life, ensuring that the body is a vessel for good deeds and obedience to Allah.
The discipline of the body serves as a gateway to higher spiritual states, as mentioned in the hadith: “Cleanliness is half of faith” (Sahih Muslim).

Taqwa of the Heart
Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Indeed, in the body there is a morsel of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
This second level transcends physical actions, delving into the emotional and spiritual state of a person. The Quran emphasises the importance of a sound heart:
“The Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit, only the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.“
Quran 26:88-89 (Surah Ash-Shu’ara)
- It involves cultivating a heart that is aware of Allah’s presence and is filled with love, fear, and hope in Him.
- Taqwa of the heart requires individuals to develop sincerity (ikhlas) in their intentions and actions, ensuring that their worship and good deeds are performed solely for the sake of Allah swt.
- It also involves guarding the heart against negative emotions such as envy, hatred, and pride, and instead fostering positive traits like compassion, humility, and gratitude. Extra Notes > Understanding Nafsul Ammara – The Evil Commanding Self
The four levels of Taqwa—Body, Heart, Soul, and Self—represent a comprehensive framework for spiritual development in Islam. Each level builds upon the previous one, guiding individuals toward a deeper connection with Allah and a more meaningful, purpose-driven life.
Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: “Verily Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but rather He looks at your hearts and actions.” (Sahih Muslim)
Taqwa of the Soul
This level represents a deeper spiritual awakening, where the Soul (Ruh) begins its journey through the various stages of Nafs development. The Quran references this spiritual progression:
“By the soul and He who proportioned it1, And inspired it with discernment of its wickedness and its righteousness, He has succeeded who purifies it, And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].”
Quran 91:7-10 (Surah Ash-Shams) [1] i.e., balanced and refined it, creating in it sound tendencies and consciousness.
- This level pertains to the inner self and the spiritual essence of a person. It involves a deeper understanding of one’s purpose in life and the quest for spiritual enlightenment.
- Taqwa of the soul encourages individuals to engage in self-reflection and self-purification (tazkiyah), striving to rid themselves of impurities and vices that hinder their spiritual growth. Moving from Nafs al-Ammara (the commanding self) through Nafs al-Lawwama (the self-reproaching soul) towards Nafs al-Mutma’inna (the tranquil soul). Extra Notes > Understanding 7 Levels of Nafs
- It emphasises the importance of connecting with Allah through acts of worship, remembrance (dhikr), and seeking knowledge from spiritual guides with an authentic Sanad, which nourishes the soul and elevates one’s spiritual state.

Taqwa of the Self
This highest level represents the complete integration of all previous levels, achieving what the Quran describes as true success:
“O you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].“
Quran 3:102 (Surah Ali-Imran)
- This level represents the highest form of Taqwa, where an individual recognises their true identity and purpose as a servant of Allah. It involves a deep & immersive understanding of the self in relation to our Creator.
- Taqwa of the self requires individuals to be aware of their responsibilities and the impact of their actions on themselves and others. It encourages a holistic approach to life, integrating islam into every aspect of existence.
- At this level, individuals strive for continuous improvement and growth, seeking to align their will with Allah’s will and to embody the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in their daily lives.

Comprehensive Islamic Framework for Spiritual Development
The four levels of Taqwa—Body, Heart, Soul, & Self—represent a comprehensive framework for spiritual development in Islam. Each level builds upon the previous one, guiding individuals toward a deeper connection with Allah and a more meaningful, purpose-driven life.
This progression follows the prophetic principle: “Actions are but by intentions” (Sunan An Nasa’i), demonstrating how external actions must be matched with internal states.
Each level builds upon and reinforces the others:
- The Body serves as the foundation
- The Heart provides the motivation and sincerity
- The Soul offers depth and spiritual connection
- The Self integrates all aspects into a complete whole
This holistic approach to Taqwa leads to what the Quran describes as true success:
“Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.“
Quran 2:5 (Surah Al Baqarah)
This islamic framework provides a practical roadmap for Muslims seeking to develop their relationship with Allah swt, leading to a more meaningful, purpose-driven life that benefits both the individual and society at large.
