THE FIVE ROOTS (USUL) OF DEEN

The Five Roots (Usul) of Deen form the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice. They are Islam, Iman, Ihsan, Taqwa, and Tauhid.

Each root addresses a different dimension of the believer; Islam represents the body and outward practice, Iman the mind and inner conviction, and Ihsan the soul and pursuit of excellence. Taqwa cultivates a constant awareness of Allah, while Tauhid affirms His absolute oneness. Together, these five roots are interconnected and guide believers toward a balanced, sincere, and fulfilling relationship with Allah.

These three categories are further elaborated into five comprehensive foundations that encompass the totality of Islamic belief and practice.

  • Islam (Sharia/Fiqh ∙ The Body)
  • Iman (Aqidah/Creed ∙ The Mind/Heart)
  • Ihsan (Spiritual Excellence ∙ The Soul)
  • Taqwa (God-consciousness/Piety)
  • Tauhid (Monotheism/Oneness of Allah)
